For some Humptulips Video
Had a great week of fishing for Summer Steelhead on the Cowlitz and also took a quick salmon trip up in Craig Alaska with my buddy Rob Ensdley who owns Prince Of Wales Sportfishing. In Craig we caught Kings to roughly 25 pounds with them averaging in the 20 pound range. Lots of fish and at times it was wide open for them. Incredible fishing for some hot Chinook that loved our mooched herring....Thanks Rob for a great and memorable trip.
Cowlitz Steelhead has been nothing short of smoking hot most days with us having one tough day this last week when the water dropped from about 8,550cfs to 6,000cfs then climbed to 9,500cfs all in a matter of a couple hours. We still had a dozen or so chances that day. Most of our fish are coming from the Blue Creek area and I look for this to continue as there are a lot of fish in the system. Bank bound ? fish the bank below or around Blue Creek itself tossing all the normal stuff. One thing that you may want to try after everything else is a a number 4 spinner with a brass blade and black body or a black blade brass body. I take apart Vibrax spinners and mix and match to get what I want if I can't find them to buy. Boat guys, freedrift small pieces of prawn on size 2 or 4 hooks with a small size 12 pink cheater and you'll get bit. Don't forget jigs work great for these fish.
Our Fall salmon season is shaping up to be awesome. Increased limits on a couple streams and good chinook returns are making for a killer season to be. I have very limited days and want to let everyone know if you want to schedule a trip with me please don't wait as I will probably be full soon.
A few fish from AK and the Cowlitz...I love Summer!
